Healthy Gums for a Healthy Mouth

Your gums are the foundation of your teeth; they hold them in place, support the roots, and even protect the underlying bone. Healthy gums are important for a healthy mouth, so don’t skip your regular cleanings and checkups!

The American Academy of Periodontology estimates that roughly 50% of adults have some form of gum disease. The early stage, known as gingivitis, is characterized by mild symptoms ranging from red, swollen gums to gums that bleed every time you floss. Gingivitis is completely reversible with non-invasive treatments and home care. However, if left untreated, gingivitis will eventually progress to periodontitis, a more serious form of gum disease. Periodontitis has been linked to an increased risk of heart attack, stroke, and uncontrolled diabetes.

Gum disease used to require surgery more often than not. While surgery is sometimes still the best option, Dr. Adey can treat many cases with less invasive techniques such as local antibiotics, deep cleanings, and medicated rinses.

Oral Cancer Screenings

Oral cancer is highly curable when it is caught early enough, so we screen for the warning signs during every routine dental checkup. We use the Vizilite® Plus oral cancer screening system, which employs a fluorescent light to detect abnormal cells in the soft tissues in your mouth.
